      <image:title>Reed Pavilion - Reed Pavilion</image:title>
<image:caption>Design-build teahouse pavilion in Hikone, Japan Spring/Summer 2019 Located on the East side of Lake Biwa in the city of Hikone, Japan, this project was designed over the course of a semester at Meiji University. Developed with studio partner Kayou Tei, this teahouse pavilion is a contemporary take on a traditional teahouse. Utilizing local lake reeds harvested nearby, the pavilion was designed as a temporary structure built on the University of Shiga’s campus. Tea has and continues to be a crucial component of Japanese identity, history and culture. This pavilion is an attempt to reinterpret components of a structured craft while harnessing environmental and spatial qualities associated with traditional Japanese teahouses. Originally designed to host two entrances based on traditional tea houses which have separate entrances for the guest and host, the design changed with time to fit the flow of movement along the pathway on campus while still enabling a sense of procession, connection to nature, change in scale, and visibility to the outside world. Built over the course of 3 days, a base structure was laid out using grasshopper and rhino which was then filled in to create density. My contribution to this project covered design and computer modeling of the form, building scale models with my partner, designing the structure in Grasshopper/Rhino, creating rendered sections and elevations and working with my classmates in the physical building of the full scale pavilion. <image:title>Platt to Prairie - Platte to Prairie</image:title>
<image:caption>Connecting rural communities to the land through infrastructure Spring 2020 Agriculture is the leading cause of impaired water quality in the United States. In Nebraska, farms and ranches make up 92% of the land. Over the past century and a half of agricultural use, disconnect has developed between people and the historic landscape of the Midwest. An environmental interpretive center, community resource space and water purification facility, this proposal aims to reconnect those living in and around the city of Aurora, Nebraska with the native flora and fauna that created the rich, fertile soil necessary for farming today. Along with the implementation of ecological patches of replanted tallgrass prairie throughout the region, this project focuses on the incorporation of a water treatment plant with public space, native prairie remediation and a local agricultural resource center to provide services for farmers to better their water usage and drainage practices. Located along the Platte River, the water treatment facility stretches along the southern riverbank, across from an existing nature park. Atop the treatment facility, the interpretive center extends out to the river and wetlands beyond, connecting visitors with the landscape and providing a viewing deck to the hundreds of thousands of migratory Sandhill Cranes who pass through the region each year. <image:caption>Forest Management and Interdisciplinary Explorations in New Timber Technologies Winter 2020 In collaboration with the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, this studio engaged a broad systems approach to understanding and challenging the role of architecture in an rural, ecologically focused context. A rural innovation hub based around silviculture, forest management and designing with wood, the project is located at Pack Forest, over 300 acres of land owned by the University of Washington just West of Mount Rainier. This architectural and master planning project merges design strategies for wood treatment, processing and production while engaging visitors and hosting education space for the university to better integrate architecture with the operations of the site and surrounding forest. Covering both masterplanning and building design, this proposal encompasses the development of a new innovation center built over the course of multiple stages determined by feasibility, funding and external resource availability with the potential for further future expansion. My contribution included masterplanning with my partner, diagramming, designing the main hub, and producing sections, elevations and perspectives. <image:title>Fashion + Architecture - Fashion + Architecture</image:title>
<image:caption>Imagining a far reaching future for humanity through an exploration of near-body architecture Fall 2019 The role and understanding of architecture is continuously changing. In a contemporary setting, this change is occurring faster than ever. This studio urged the exploration of near and far body architecture, the reconsideration of how we interact with our surroundings and the role/meaning of architecture in our daily lives. Set far in the future where the human species and climate have been pushed to extremes, this work imagines an outcome of assimilation between biological and technological forces. Wrought with cataclysmic events over the last millennia, humans have retreated to the depths of the ocean. In order to exist in such extreme conditions, Homo sapiens have evolved a mutualistic relationship with marine organisms, developing hybridized exo-calcareous skeletons to support, feed and communicate. The bodies within have been reduced to mere vestigial traces of a life once lived. Reproduction, speech and eating as we know it are no more, but with these adaptations comes a new understanding of human identity. Professor: Vikram Prakash</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Shoal Seafood Market - The Shoal</image:title>
<image:caption>Waterfront Seafood Market + Shellfish Farm Winter 2018 Throughout Seattle’s entire history, water and water ecology has acted as a critical cultural and economic resource for the city. Exploring themes of urban context, site analysis, urban and architectural design, this seafood market brings new life to the underutilized pier 48 along Alaskan Avenue on Seattle’s downtown waterfront. Just South of the Seattle Ferry Terminal, The Shoal is a direct response to the push for greater public access to the waterfront while revitalizing the fishing industry of the city. Nesting a visitors center, public market and fishing and shellfish farming infrastructure under a single undulating roof, the structure reaches northward, greeting pedestrian traffic from Pike Place Market while better engaging the southern downtown communities of Pioneer Square and the International District. Continuations of the roof structure and pattern extend down the pier, hosting covered picnic areas and space for recreation. This project celebrates the historically significant side of Seattle in its connection to water while giving new life to a dwindling local industry within the city.
